BMW reveals all-new i3 sedan: Most exciting 3 Series yet?

BMW has officially revealed the latest generation of its i3 sedan, marking a significant milestone for one of the brand’s most iconic nameplates. The new model signals BMW’s continued transition toward electrification while preserving the driving character that the 3 Series has represented for decades.

Unlike the earlier compact electric car launched in 2013 under the same name, this new i3 takes a completely different approach. It is designed as a fully electric sedan positioned as the next evolutionary step for the well-known 3 Series lineup. For the first time in the model’s long history, the car receives a full electric platform developed specifically for modern EV performance and efficiency.

The i3 also follows the design direction established by BMW’s Neue Klasse family of vehicles, sharing technological foundations and architectural elements with the iX3 electric SUV. However, BMW has taken care to give the sedan its own identity, ensuring it feels distinct rather than simply a smaller version of the SUV.

From the front, the car introduces a modern interpretation of BMW’s classic styling cues. Instead of the large traditional kidney grille seen on earlier models, the new i3 uses slim horizontal lighting elements to frame the front fascia. These illuminated panels integrate the brand’s familiar design elements, including the dual-kidney outline and the signature “quad-eye” daytime running light pattern, while also housing sensors for advanced safety systems.

At the rear, the lighting continues the theme of modernised heritage. The tail lights stretch widely across the back of the car and reinterpret the brand’s classic L-shaped design. The result is a wider visual stance that gives the sedan a confident road presence without relying on the full-width light bars commonly seen in many modern vehicles.

BMW has also retained the sporty proportions that have defined the 3 Series for decades. The i3 features strong shoulders, pronounced wheel arches and a sleek silhouette. Its slightly shortened overhangs and tapered roofline contribute to what designers describe as a “2.5-box” profile, giving the sedan a dynamic and athletic appearance.

Beneath the bodywork lies BMW’s latest electric vehicle platform equipped with the company’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. This new system focuses on improving driving range, performance and sustainability. Compared with previous EV architectures, it introduces higher-density batteries, advanced thermal management and more efficient power delivery.

Thanks to this updated battery technology, the i3 is expected to offer significantly extended driving capability. Its aerodynamic design, lighter structure and sealed underbody help maximise efficiency, allowing the sedan to travel further on a single charge than many current electric models in its class.

Charging technology has also been upgraded. The new platform supports an 800-volt electrical system designed to deliver extremely rapid charging speeds. When connected to a suitable high-power charger, the car can recover a substantial portion of its driving range within a short period of time, making long-distance travel more convenient.

At launch, BMW has introduced the i3 in a dual-motor configuration known as the i3 50 xDrive. This version delivers strong performance figures with impressive torque output, ensuring the sedan retains the lively driving characteristics traditionally associated with the 3 Series. Rather than focusing solely on straight-line speed, BMW emphasises responsive handling and precise driving control.

A key component behind this driving experience is a new electronic control architecture featuring four advanced computing units within the vehicle. One of these systems, referred to by BMW as the “Heart of Joy,” processes key vehicle functions such as acceleration, braking, energy recovery and steering response. With significantly increased processing capability compared with earlier systems, it aims to deliver smoother and more intuitive driving dynamics.

To complement this technology, the i3 receives a new suspension setup that includes stroke-dependent dampers and a refined multi-link rear axle design. These components work together to provide stability, agility and comfort, reinforcing the sedan’s reputation as a driver-focused vehicle.

Inside the cabin, the car introduces BMW’s latest Panoramic iDrive interface. The system features a wide display positioned at the base of the windscreen that stretches across the dashboard, presenting essential driving information within the driver’s natural field of vision. A large central touchscreen is also angled slightly toward the driver to improve usability.

Passengers can expect a spacious interior as well. The electric platform allows for a flat floor and a longer wheelbase compared with previous generations of the 3 Series. This extra length provides additional legroom for rear passengers and contributes to a more open cabin environment.

Advanced digital features are also integrated throughout the vehicle. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant enables voice interaction with various vehicle functions, while new driver-assistance systems offer enhanced semi-autonomous capabilities that support steering and braking during highway driving.

Production of the new i3 will take place at BMW’s historic Munich plant, which has undergone extensive upgrades to support the brand’s next generation of electric vehicles. The facility is expected to transition entirely toward producing electric models in the coming years.

According to current plans, series production of the electric sedan is scheduled to begin in August 2026. The first customer deliveries are expected shortly after, with early indications suggesting the model could reach markets such as Singapore in 2027. With its combination of long driving range, fast charging capability and advanced onboard technology, the all-new i3 represents a major step forward in the evolution of the BMW 3 Series.
