Local cosplayer-actress Rurusama is putting in her best efforts for her first movie role in the upcoming Chinese New Year film Luck My Life.
During an interview with AsiaOne on Feb 9 while promoting the film, the 26-year-old shared that taking on the role of mahjong trainer Cat was a personal "challenge."
"I was really excited when director Eric Wong finally reached out to me after jumping through many hoops to get my contact... When he introduced me to the character, I was immediately drawn to it because I felt like he had chosen a character that matched my online persona. It was a truly interesting experience," she said.
Luck My Life revolves around Zhuo Tiancai (Richie Koh), who was born lucky when his mother (Joey Swee) gave birth to him on a mahjong table after a winning streak.
Growing up privileged, he becomes an arrogant young man who wins every mahjong game until he meets legendary mahjong champion Gu Lei (Tay Ping Hui), who teaches him a valuable lesson about humility.

As Tiancai races against time to regain his luck and defeat Gu Lei in a mahjong competition, he learns that true happiness comes from the love of family and friends and hard work.
Rurusama's 'sexiness' and 'sassiness' in Portraying Cat
Director Eric explained that casting Rurusama as Cat was a natural choice due to her charisma.
"Cat being the only female teacher needed an actress who exudes sexiness, sassiness, and style. Rurusama perfectly embodies these qualities, and I believe not many local artists could match her level of sassiness. I am very pleased with the casting," he remarked.
To bring Cat to life, Rurusama underwent 10 acting classes, each costing a significant amount, to refine her skills.
She expressed, "It was a worthwhile investment as there were many aspects of acting that I needed to learn. I had to familiarize myself with the directorial language and be able to adapt on the spot to any changes requested by the director. It was indeed a significant challenge, but I am thankful for the practice and effort put into it."
Richie's Experience Portraying Tiancai

Richie shared that playing Tiancai was a refreshing experience after his role as Jiahao in a local film.
He mentioned, "Taking on a more relaxed and comedic role after my previous character allowed me to take a breather and have some fun. There were moments of impromptu comedy on set, making it a flexible and enjoyable experience."
He also recounted a challenging scene in Luck My Life that made him nauseous, where Tiancai faces a series of unfortunate events starting from a plumbing mishap in the morning.
Richie added, "Filming that scene was tough. After a few takes, I genuinely felt like I was going to be sick and had to stop. I informed the director that I couldn't continue."
Tay Ping Hui and Richie Koh's Dynamic on Set

The film also marks the second collaboration between Richie and local actor Tay Ping Hui, who previously worked together on a short film.
Tay Ping Hui praised Richie's talent and shared, "Working with him was comfortable. He is humble and talented. This young man has great potential. I enjoy working with actors like him. We respect each other, and our chemistry on set was great."
Richie admitted to feeling intimidated by Tay Ping Hui initially due to his presence but found the experience of learning from him on set enjoyable and enriching.

When asked about luck in showbiz, the actors emphasized the importance of hard work and professionalism in creating opportunities.
Tay Ping Hui shared, "Although luck plays a role, it's not entirely random. By being dedicated and excelling in your craft, you can increase your chances of success. If you are serious and professional in your work, people will take notice and appreciate your efforts, ultimately opening more doors for you."
